Put the freeze on winter deer damage

January 27, 2011

Although difficult for the softhearted, turning a cold shoulder to visiting deer is the right thing to do

BRODHEADSVILLE, PA – “It’s so cold out. They must be starving – why else would they be looking for food? If I feed them, maybe they’ll stay away from my plants!” Sound familiar? As tempting as it may be, turn a cold shoulder to foraging deer – do not feed them! And, in spite of the chilly temperatures, ice or snow, applying a proven effective, all-season repellent right through the winter months will help stop deer cold in their tracks and prevent them from destroying ornamental bushes, trees and winter garden plants.

Don’t feed the deer.

Contrary to how it may seem to the softhearted, feeding deer is not good for them and it’s obviously not good for landscaping. In fact, feeding deer actually trains them to think of that backyard as a reliable source of food – and they won’t stop at generous handouts – expensive plantings will become tasty treats, too. Although well meaning, feeding deer promotes unhealthy behavior.

They will stay near the easy source of food, even if it’s inadequate, rather than seeking food in their natural environment. If deer ingest a food type that is not part of their natural diet they can become sick and even die.

Typically, they will compete for handouts, leaving more submissive deer underfed and promoting overly aggressive behavior.

Use an effective repellent

A liberal application of a proven effective, all-season deer repellent, such as Liquid Fence® Deer & Rabbit Repellent, on and around landscaped garden areas will help stop the deer from making a winter meal of shrubs, plants, trees and vines.  Be sure to apply when temperatures are above freezing. Liquid Fence works on scent, so the deer don’t even have to take a bite – unlike many other repellents that require the deer to “munch away” to be effective. The product should be applied during a dry period, then again, one week later. After that, a once-a-month spraying is all that’s needed.

An ounce of prevention…

It’s much easier to prevent the damage than it is to stop a foraging cycle that has already begun. Deer are creatures of habit. If they munched your tulips in the spring or crunched your pumpkins in the fall, you can bet they’ll be chomping your arborvitae in the winter! By applying Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent at the first signs of deer foraging, you’ll break their habit before it takes a strong hold.

A neighborhood effort

As in most situations, there is power in numbers. If adjacent properties practice the same deer control policies, the neighborhood will benefit. So work hard at convincing soft-hearted Mary, who’s been seen regularly feeding the local deer population, that she’s actually doing the deer more harm than good. Not to mention angering her neighbors by training the deer to continually seek food in her (and, consequently their) backyard!

New Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent Granular shakes up the lawn & garden world!

January 25, 2011

BRODHEADSVILLE, PA – The Liquid Fence ® Company is shaking things up in the lawn and garden world with a granular deer and rabbit repellent.

From the company that manufactures the #1-selling deer & rabbit repellent comes a new easy-to-apply granular that provides the same 100% guaranteed protection for all low-growing plants against deer and rabbit damage.

This unique biodegradable repellent is easy-to-apply on and around flower beds, vegetable gardens, ground cover and lawns, and safe for use on edible crops. And plants will love the diatomaceous earth-based formula.

Formed from fossils, diatomaceous earth improves drainage and can enhance air circulation around plant roots.

Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent is eco-friendly and ready-to-use in 5 and 2 pound shaker bottles, covering approximately 500 square feet per pound. Best of all, no spreader is needed; just shake it where you need it!

Homeowners, professional landscapers, and commercial growers have long discovered that Liquid Fence stops destructive deer and rabbits from ruining landscape and crops, naturally.

Since it works on scent, deer and rabbits don’t browse crops and plants because their natural aversion to the scent never diminishes! And, unlike many competitor repellents, the long-lasting, rain-resistant formula doesn’t require rotation with other repellent brands to remain effective.

Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent Granular is destined to become a new easy-to-use favorite in the homeowner, grower and landscaper arsenal to ward off these relentless foes. Look for it soon at garden centers, and hardware stores.

The #1-Selling Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellents now labeled to be used on edible crops!

March 18, 2010

No more Deer or Rabbits in Your Veggie Garden!

BRODHEADSVILLE, PA – Those doe-eyed and twitchy-faced eating machines that can mow down a row of lettuce in minutes have finally met their match, now that Liquid Fence® Deer & Rabbit Repellent and Dual Action Rabbit Repellents have been labeled for use on food crops.  This is good news for all gardeners looking for a truly effective, eco-friendly repellent for fruit and vegetable plants.

And it’s great news for the more than 41 million households who are planning to grow a vegetable garden this year.  It is estimated that $50 in seeds can produce $1,250 worth of homegrown groceries purchased at a supermarket!

“With hundreds of dollars at stake, using our affordable and effective repellents to keep hungry deer and rabbits away from costly plants and crops makes good economic sense,” says Edward Abraham, president of the Liquid Fence Company. “There has been no formula change – they’re still the best deer and rabbit repellents on the market.  The fact that they’re all-natural, eco-friendly and now labeled for edible crops, just makes them even more attractive!”

Bye-Bye Bambi & Friends! Did you know that just one deer can eat up to ten pounds of food per day? Imagine the damage a horde of deer or gang of rabbits can do to your landscape and homegrown groceries – in just minutes!

You can try to control the pests with expensive fences or home remedies, like fabric softener sheets draped on your plants – all with limited success. Or use a repellent that is guaranteed to work, suggests Dr. Allan Armitage, renowned horticulturist and author.  “I’ve been a fan of Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent since my first application… I’m a believer!”

Many other repellent formulas supposedly deter with taste, which means the animals must take a bite to experience the effect. At least one bite per deer – multiplied by a herd – can add up to major plant devastation!  Liquid Fence works on scent – so deer and rabbits don’t hang around browsing your ornamentals, annuals, perennials and edibles.

Because deer and rabbits have a natural aversion to the scent of Liquid Fence – a triggered fear instinct – the effectiveness will never diminish. This eliminates the need to rotate with other repellent brands. It’s the only deer and rabbit repellent you’ll ever need.

Beat-it Bunny Bandits! Where there’s one bunny, you can be certain others are nearby! High concentrations of young rabbits with voracious appetites are extremely persistent. They can do serious damage to expensive plants, flowers, and ornamentals, as well as your edible crops and plants.

Using taste as well as scent, without harming humans, pets, or vegetation, Liquid Fence Dual Action Rabbit Repellent delivers a one-two punch that stops young bunnies cold.

Arm yourself to win. The new industry-exclusive orbital sprayer, available on both repellents, makes spraying hard-to-reach spots – like under leaves – a snap. It even lets you spray upside-down! Plus, there’s no wasted product because the unique 360 degree design sprays every last drop!

Long-lasting and rain-resistant, both repellents dry with virtually no odor or residue. As of March 2010 all Deer & Rabbit and Dual Action Rabbit Repellents manufactured will sport the new “For use on edible crops” labeling.

So get ready for spring planting but remember to protect your landscape and veggie garden from raiding deer and rabbits and you’ll be tasting tomatoes and crunchy lettuce – without uninvited deer and rabbit nibblers!

The Liquid Fence® Company Awarded ARS Seal of Approval

November 2, 2009

BRODHEADSVILLE, PA - Deer love roses, but not in gardens sprayed with Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent, according to the American Rose Society.  It recently awarded the prestigious ARS Endorsement Seal of Approval to Liquid Fence® Deer & Rabbit Repellent, endorsing it as the most effective repellent to keep deer away from roses.

ARSEndorsedPrintSmallThis multiple award-winning product works on scent and not taste, and stops deer cold from browsing and chomping on valuable plants.

“Our ARS test gardeners thoroughly test and evaluate products based on strict criteria for effectiveness,” says Maria Scott from the American Rose Society. “It must be approved by the product evaluation team and the ARS board of directors to receive the ARS Endorsement Seal of Approval.”

Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent, America’s #1 selling deer and rabbit repellent, continues to accrue awards, including the National Home Gardening Club seal-of-approval for product effectiveness.

“The American Rose Society’s endorsement is important to gardeners who now know they have a repellent they can trust to keep the deer out of their rose gardens!” says Eddie Abraham, president of the Liquid Fence Company.

Like all their products, Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent is environmentally safe and will not harm people, plants or pets.

“Rose-lovers can be assured that when you spray our Deer & Rabbit Repellent on your favorite roses, and other plants, Bambi and his friends are going to look for their rose delicacies elsewhere—we guarantee it!” says Abraham.

Take the Bite Out of Deer Damage to Protect Your Landscape and Wallet

May 21, 2009

BRODHEADSVILLE, PA – When Bambi invites all his friends to dinner this Spring, make sure it’s not in your yard! Or they’ll be crunching tulips like candy and popping peas right off the vine.  And you can bet they’ll be stealing your prize tomatoes this summer and munching your mums in the fall!

112With deer tipping the 30 million mark and suburban sprawl on the rise, it’s no wonder these unwanted creatures are cruising your neighborhood and destroying your yard in the process.

“We garden to create our own private patch of Eden and escape the demands of daily life,” says Rhonda Massingham Hart, author of Deerproofing Your Yard & Garden. “When deer violate these living sanctuaries they damage more than plants. They hurt us.”

It’s more than frustrating to spend your time, effort, and money to turn your yard into a haven only to find your new flowers and shrubs have been mowed down by hungry deer and rabbits.  It’s expensive. An adult deer eats between 6 and 10 lbs of food per day, costing homeowners millions of dollars annually.

In today’s economy, you really can’t afford not to treat your valuable plants and yard. “Folks spend too much time and money on the perfect plants to let the deer and rabbits spoil it all by eating them,” says world-renown horticulturist, native plant breeder and author Dr. Allan Armitage.

Oh, deer…what to do?
Forget putting a radio blaring in your azaleas, fabric softener sheets strewn over your flowers, hair in mesh bags or soap dangling from tree branches. Bambi and friends will enjoy the music as they play with the soap and dine alfresco using the sheets as placemats.

But be forewarned: An ounce of prevention in spring is worth a pound of cure.

You could put up deer fences everywhere, and that will pretty much stop the deer. An ideal deer proof fence should be constructed of woven wire at least 8 feet high. Even though building and maintaining a deer proof fence can be expensive ($10 – $12 per foot) and labor intensive, a well-constructed fence will last for many years.  But deer have been known to jump fairly high, and the fencing blocks the view of your tulips and that defeats the purpose.

A more economical method of excluding deer may be with an electric fence. Electric fences should be constructed of highly visible polytape wire and quality fencing components, using from 1 to 5 or more strands of charged wire. Higher deer populations typically require more charged wires because deer are hungrier and more difficult to deter. But this is expensive and the wire often breaks.

According Dave Mizejewski, naturalist with the National Wildlife Association.Mizejewski, “It’s much easier to prevent critter damage than it is to stop the foraging cycle once it’s begun. Repellents are easy and are designed to smell or taste bad to critters.” He recommends all-natural repellents that stop critters from eating your plants, are safe for the environment and don’t harm wildlife.

deerNrabbit

Back off Bambi!
Deer rely heavily on their super-sensitive noses to find food and sense danger, but it’s also their Achilles heel.

That’s why a liberal application of a proven effective, all-season deer repellent such as Liquid Fence® Deer & Rabbit Repellent (www.liquidfence.com) on and around landscaped gardens stops unwanted visitors cold from dining on plants they find irresistible.

It works on ‘scent’ and dries odorless to us but not to deer and rabbits, so they don’t have to take a bite to be effective – unlike other repellents that require the deer to “munch away.”  Once they get a sniff, even rabbits will be hopping back to the forest and not toward your carrots or pansies!

“I’ve been a fan of Liquid Fence since my first application years ago,” says Dr. Armitage. “It’s the No. 1 repellent on the market, and I wouldn’t trust my garden to anything else.”

Garden Survival Guide
Armitage recommends spraying a repellent in the spring as soon as the tender shoots appear, and around all plants, trees and shrubs.

And you don’t need to buy different repellents to rotate applications and reapply weekly to see great results. Rotating repellents is an “urban myth”.

Today folks are looking for ways to save “green” while they “go green.”  Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent is actually less expensive than the green alternatives so you can feel good that it’s safe for the environment as well as your kids, pets, plants, and your wallet.

Repellent should be applied monthly and can withstand about one-inch of rain. It’s a good idea to reapply after a heavy downpour of an inch or more.

All together now
And if Bambi invites his other friends – rabbits, geese, moles, snakes and other unwanted critters, The Liquid Fence Company has a complete line of natural, environmentally safe solutions to keep them out of the garden and in the woods.

Young Maryland Scientist “Discovers” Effective Deer Repellent

July 30, 2007

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – With an exploding white-tailed deer population wreaking havoc on Maryland’s suburban landscapes, vegetable gardens, and one very special pear tree, Jackson Lee Koepke of Ellicott City was determined to discover “the most effective deer repellent” and then go public with his findings. And that’s just what he did!
He devised a series of ingenious experiments that were carried out on a deer-plagued property bordering Patapsco Valley State Park. The dramatic results were presented to a small group of fellow scientists, not to mention his 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Bourke, at Hollifield Station Elementary School’s most recent Science Fair.

“It was a lot of fun and a great project for Jack,” father Mark Koepke boasted.

Jackson chose the experiment for the school Science Fair after his sister’s Korean ornamental pear tree was decimated by local deer only one week after it had been planted in the Koepke’s yard. “Darn if the deer didn’t nearly eat the entire tree. And it was expensive!” Mr. Koepke lamented.

The experiment involved five 10-pound piles of a deer-favorite, dried corn. Equally spaced in the family yard that adjoins Patapsco, four of the five piles were mixed with different repellents recommended by a local garden products retailer: human hair (from Jackson’s last haircut), Squirrel Away Hot Pepper Powder, a grated bar of Irish Spring soap, and Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent. A control pile was left untreated (and lasted all of two hours). After two weeks of well-documented observation and very mixed results, Jackson Koepke had one clear winner in his “Most Effective Deer Repellent” experiment.

“The Liquid Fence treated corn was completely untouched. Other methods slowed the deer but ultimately failed.”

Organized on a bright green poster board, the results of Jackson’s experiment are actually quite amazing when you consider the number of deer that regularly come looking for a meal on the family property.

“We counted 12 deer in the yard just yesterday, right Jack?” adds dad, “But now they won’t eat anything sprayed with Liquid Fence.” So all’s well that ends well. Jackson’s presentation was a hit at the school Science Fair and thanks to his “discovery”, his sister’s Korean pear tree has now fully recovered. But, what about future science projects and career plans?

“I want to be an engineer” says Jackson enthusiastically, and, if you have a bit of time he’ll tell you all about his current backyard Lego city building project.

If Derek Fell says he couldn’t have a garden without it, chances are, neither can you.

May 18, 2007

R_Derek72BRODHEADSVILLE, PA – In the heart of rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, near the quiet village of Tinicum, there lies a little piece of the English countryside called Cedaridge Farm. It is the home of Derek Fell, world-renowned horticulturist, photographer and author of more than sixty award-winning garden books. A test garden where Derek evaluates different plant varieties and growing techniques, Cedaridge Farm is 24 acres of natural and cultivated beauty, the likes of which would have inspired Claude Monet himself. But what is most amazing about this haven of herbaceous tranquility is that it exists – survives might be a better word – in spite of daily invasion by relentless, destructive forces of nature. Every evening, like clockwork, dozens of deer from neighboring Ralph Stover State Park wander through Derek’s property, hungry and looking for dinner. They’re tempted by the tasty plantings – but they don’t touch – because Derek has a secret weapon – Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent.

Having tried countless methods to repel deer – with little or no effect – Derek is completely reliant on this all-natural, easy-to-use spray. Liquid Fence is so effective, even protecting deer favorites such as tulips and hostas, it has prompted Derek to assert, “I couldn’t have a garden without it”.

Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent works on scent – so the deer don’t have to take a bite to be repelled. In the early spring, Derek starts spraying Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent on his plantings as soon as the tender shoots appear. A once-a-month spraying is all that’s needed because Liquid Fence keeps working after it rains – but Derek says it’s a good idea to reapply after a heavy downpour of an inch or more. Best of all, it’s effective through all four seasons – repelling deer right through the coldest winter months.
